Prepare for your first brand conversation

Know what to ask before you agree to make content.

Understand the deliverables

Ask how many pieces of content are needed, their format and length, the deadline and whether you are expected to publish them.

Clarify usage and revisions

Ask where and how the content will be used, whether paid advertising is included, how long usage lasts and what revisions are expected.

Confirm the agreement

Make sure the scope, fee, payment timing and approval process are written down. If an important term is unclear, resolve it before you start.

Ask where the content will appear

Clarify whether the brand wants content for its own social channels, a website, advertising or a combination. Ask whether your name, face or account will be used and whether you need to post to your own audience.

Avoid guessing at the scope

If a request changes after you agree, pause to clarify the new deliverables and timing. Keep a record of what was requested and agreed, especially when additional versions or reshoots are involved.

Take it one step at a time.

Try one suggestion, review what happened and build from there.
